In May 2003, Electronic Recycling Association of Alberta announced its recycling program aimed at landfills. The program was developed to pull out computer and electronic waste from landfills with specialty made bins. Due to a high percentage of reusable computers, computer parts and accessories found in landfills the E.R.A was able to provide this service at no charge to landfills.

In October, 2004, Alberta Government introduced its tax program, aimed at recycling all computer and electronic waste found in landfills. The goal is to collect a tax from citizens on new computers and electronics, and use that money to process and dismantle all ewaste.
