News 2005

Alberta residents beware! There is a government ran computer and electronics recycling program being heavily advertised on tv, radio, and internet. This program collects a tax from you upon purchase of computers and electronics. The money collected is used to fund multymillion dollar recycling companies in Alberta, all at a large cost. Now most of these computers being recycled, don't need to be. Many are in heavy demand by local charities, non profit groups, poor people in Alberta, Canada, and all over the world. We are saddened by the governments response time and time again and unwillingless to take action. The bourcracy they have in place is unwilling to look at options, and blindly recycles valuable tools and equipment that many people can not even afford. We are looking for support on a class action appeal for change. We call on all hospitals, schools, and organizations of all kind to look at options. Calgary Drop in Center, The Red Cross, Many Veteran related insitutions, are all in need of computers. We are posting a list of over 100 charities and groups in need on our website in the near future.

Toronto, Ontario, our depot is now open. Companies and individuals in Toronto can contact us to donate, remarket or recycle your surplus, excess, or obsolete computer equipment. Click here Toronto.

We are extremely happy and excited to announce that we are days from being open in Vancouver, British Columbia. ERA is soon to have a grand opening of our downtown Vancouver, Computer and Electronics Depot located at 2028 Wall Street. Keep posted to the website for grand opening event ceremony details and your invitation. Companies and individuals from Vancouver and area can already contact us to donate, remarket or recycle your surplus, excess, or obsolete computer equipment. Click here Vancouver.

Our current request list for donation of laptops and computers to different charities, non profit groups, elderly homes, disability centers, learning institutions, in Alberta, and across the world has grown to a record level. If you are interested in helping one of the groups that are currently waiting for equipment please contact us for a list of needy organizations and you can then choose who to donate to. You or your company can also donate your computers directly to us. Click here.

ERA is currently looking for old laptops and computers. Please donate your old computers as they can be of use to somebody. Please look at this picture.

ERA goes on TV to try and get some attention. Currently landfills across Alberta, and many government organizations are unnecessarily disposing of old computers, when they can be used by people here and abroad. We have many outstanding requests for old computers from all over the world, and can send them as a form of foreign aid to help these countries access information, educate children, etc. Calgary Appeal Image, Calgary Sound, Edmonton Appeal Image, Edmonton Sound.

Now you can donate your old laptops, computer or electronic gadgetry at Office Depot locations in Calgary. Check our depot locations for the addresses. Only items sold at Office Depot will be accepted as donations. If you have an old laptop or computer that somebody else could use, please bring it to the Office Depot locations, and get yourself a new one!

Great news from the ERA! Our many donors have enabled us to collect enough computers help many charities and non profits this year already. In return we will be issuing awards to our biggest donors just like last year. Our TV commercial will air in September through December, and will feature all of our depot locations for donations and recycling of old computers. We thank all the contributors with all our hearts. Your help has enabled us to be able to expand into new cities and provinces. Hopefully in a year or two from now, we won't have people or charities who can not access a computer for learning or work, first in Alberta, British Columbia and Canada wide, then in the 3rd world where our help is really needed. Many countries to which the Canadian Government issues aid to, have no computers or network infrastructure. We are working with some of these countries to wire them up for the future, which is yesterday for us.

Tax receipts are available for larger corporate donations Canada wide. Click here

Once again we're going to a new city. This time it is to British Columbia's Vancouver. This city provides a great opportunity for the socially and environmentally beneficial programs of the ERA. Being mostly liberal, social improvement and betterment of life for every person is very important to this city. ERA's training, volunteer and donation programs will fit in well with other social initiatives happening in Vancouver.

Many foreign countries schools, colleges, libraries, NGO's and even governments have approached the ERA with requests for old computers. Countries such a Belize, Montenegro, Bosnia, African countries, Middle East countries, and many others. We have outstanding requests for 1000's of computers that these people would very much benefit from. Imagine the impact of providing working computers to communities disconnected from the rest of the world, with no educational tools. These computers can provide everything children and people need to learn and develop skills and more. If your company has outdated computers, or if you wish to donate your old computer please contact us.

Once again ERA donates some computers to an organization involved with children, Child and Youth Friendly Calgary out of Calgary. Many of these computers would have otherwise been taken to landfill in Edmonton, or destroyed in Red Deer or Calgary. Many people in Alberta and abroad can benefit from our program. Just imagine not being able to afford a computer, a whole world is taken away from you. We urge everyone in Alberta, and soon in British Columbia to first donate their old computers, and let us recycle them once they are too old for anyone to use them.

More computer and electronics retailers are taking responsibility for the products they sell. ERA has convinced several new retailers to take part in our take-back program in Alberta. No longer do computers have to be taken to the landfills. Retailers in Calgary and Edmonton are taking donations of old laptops and computers. Computers suitable for recycling can also be dropped of at these locations. Hopefully soon more retailers will take responsibility and take part in our program to collect all old computers and electronics.

More and more Alberta's political figures are realizing the good work the ERA does for the community in Alberta and the environmental difference all of our joint efforts can make. Read more

Another successful event that collected old computers and electronics for reuse and recycling. This time we did an event together with the Federal Government of Canada, at Calgary's Harry Hays Building. Click for a picture.

useful computers which were given to local daycares and elderly homes. We placed one of our bins at the tower and companies brought their old computers to us. Any computers we were not able to donate were recycled. Click for a picture.

ERA is celebrating the second year of our computer depot system at our Computer Depot location in Calgary. This event will feature local entertainment, and will happen on the first Saturday of the Stampede, July 9th, 2005. Calgary and Edmonton residents are invited to come by and take part in the festivities. This is a fully licensed event.

ERA officials visited Edmonton's so called computer recycling program on May, 27, 2005 and were disgusted. The Edmonton landfill was filled with computers and electronics of all kind. Newer and usable computers very useful to local poor residents and thousands of monitors which could be on people's desks were just laying around in mud and water polluting our precious environment. The same people in charge of this landfill refused our requests to go in at no charge to the government and clean up this environmental disaster. We urge everyone from Edmonton to call the Mayor and help us get this problem under control. Our organization could find a home for all usable computers found in the landfill, and environmentally recycle the rest. Click for pictures of this disaster.

ERA currently has outstanding requests from local and foreign organizations that require it to collect more than 65,000 used desktop computer systems including monitors, and as many as 80,000 laptops of any shape and condition. Many of these will come from the recycling stream, companies which do not realize that maybe their old computers can be donated, etc.

ERA donates a portion of proceeds of its reuse activities to Edmonton's Capital Health Royal Alexandra Hospital Children's Services Foundation.

ERA donates several newer working computer systems to Edmonton's Boyle Street Community Services Inner City Resource Centre. This organization which helps many disadvantaged individuals in Edmonton was using old Pentium1 computers in their community access room. ERA feels that is very inadequate for Albertan charities and non profits to use equipment this old. Many more recent systems are sitting in Edmonton's landfill when they could be put to good use in the community. Many computers which can be given to charities in Alberta are also being unnecessarily recycled by the provincial and municipal recycling programs in Alberta, when they could benefit people and potentially change their lives.

ERA is currently petitioning to prevent the provincial and municipal governments and its contractors from unnecessarily destroying useful computer equipment. To the surprise of many people, the government is fully supporting and funding computers to be taken apart and dismantled, even when not required. Zero support is given to organizations such as ours who try to reuse this equipment, and provide it to many people who can benefit from having such valuable tools as computers. If you want to donate your computer and possibly see it go to a good cause, please click here.

ERA offers residential and commercial pickups in both Calgary, and Edmonton.

We are currently collecting all kinds of computers, monitors, and laptops for many of our programs. We've received numerous requests from various agencies throughout Alberta, Canada, and throughout the world, looking for old computers which they can use to help their cause. We are compiling a list to post online. Many international communities such as Macedonia, Kosovo, Uganda, Haiti just need the basic systems to use, while Alberta and Canada wide, we are donating to institutions and centers computers P2 or higher.

ERA is donating some computers collected in our programs to Calgary's Bethany Care Society - one of Western Canada's largest voluntary not-for-profit providers of health, housing and community support for seniors and persons with disabilities. Their care programs include adult day support, respite care, residential care, designated supportive living, long term care, multi-stage dementia care, and programs directed at specific cultural groups. Not only does the Bethany Care society provide vital services to senior and person's with disabilities, they also act as advocates to help increase the profile of seniors and persons with disabilities in Alberta and raise issues that affect their lives.

Electronic Recycling Association of Alberta joins the National Cristina Foundation (NCF), which provides computer technology and solutions to give people with disabilities, students at risk and economically disadvantaged persons the opportunity, through training, to lead more independent and productive lives. Every day, across Canada, America and around the world, National Cristina Foundation is working to ensure that used computer technology resources that no longer meet an enterprise's or an individual's needs are given a second productive life as a tool for developing human potential. This is an excellent partnership for ERA, which can reuse, and recycle old computer equipment throughout Alberta, Canada.

ERA is in need of assistance in Edmonton! Please look on the Careers with ERA page for more info, and to contact us if you can help in any way. Volunteer, part time, and full time positions are available.

Soon non profit organizations, elderly homes, and libraries in Edmonton that can not afford computers will be donated collected equipment from ERA's programs. We encourage such groups to contact us if they are interested in receiving equipment..

ERA's electronics reuse program is quickly proving how valuable reuse is to recycling. Many items collected at municipal collection sites still function and can be used by someone otherwise unable to afford this equipment brand new. ERA's municipal programs as illustrated in this Vulcan story collect equipment for reuse and recycling, ensuring there is no damage. This way computers and electronics can be redeployed into the community for further use, and still efficiently collect all of the end-of-life recyclables.

Electronic Recycling Association of Alberta is proud to announces the launch of Edmonton's Computer Depot. The Depot is open now OPEN! Grand Opening with media and charity giveaways is scheduled for May 13th, 2005. This location is perfectly suited for ERA's program. The program is geared to collect old computer and electronic equipment, which most of us think of as obsolete. The fact is, most of this equipment is usable and very valuable to somebody. An old PI could make a great server for a website, help children learn, elderly pass time talking to family, and so on. The location is near an EcoStation in Edmonton, so people no longer have to throw their equipment into the landfill, never to be used again. The address is 11404 143 Street.

Staples Business Depot signs up to ERA's depot program. Staples locations listed on our website will be participating in this excellent program, which enables easy access to a drop off point at no charge to consumers. Now it is even more convenient to dispose of your old or unwanted laptops, computers, monitors and accessories. Items can either be given away for donation or recycling directly at the Staples locations.

The location will be announced in the next few weeks. The building selected is located in downtown Edmonton, and is about 10,000 square feet in size.

In 2004, ERA along with its many partners in reducing the amount of electronic waste in Alberta’s landfills jointly prevented upwards of 700,000 pounds of computers and electronics from being buried in our landfills. To grasp their contribution to the Alberta environment, this year their efforts have prevented 6 times the height of the Calgary tower of computer towers stacked on top of each other from going into the landfills. 6 times the height of the Calgary tower of computer monitors, 3 times the height of Calgary tower of televisions. More

A UN research group, confirmed Electronic Recycling Association of Alberta's practice of reuse of computer and electronic equipment as more environmentally friendly than recycling of that equipment. Research carried out last year by Eric Williams of the United Nations University in Japan proved without a doubt that re-use is better for the environment than recycling. The majority of PCs routinely disposed of for recycling by businesses and consumers alike are actually far from their real ‘end-of-life’ and could go on to give as much as 6,000 additional hours of use.
