ERA Donates 10 Computers to the CONC – Shelter on Bloor

By electronic recycling association June 7, 2023

The Electronic Recycling Association (ERA) is proud to announce the donation of 10 computers to the Christie Ossington Neighborhood Centre (CONC) Shelter on Bloor.

The CONC operates as a men’s shelter and community kitchen with a primary focus on serving an aging demographic. As part of their strategic expansion plans, they are poised to establish a second facility that will incorporate a dedicated computer/technology learning space. This initiative aims to empower both residents and community members by equipping them with essential computer skills. The intended outcomes encompass facilitating online employment application processes, fostering resume development, enabling effective communication with loved ones, and facilitating access to online training resources.

The need for accessible shelters in Toronto is critical. Only 4 of 15 shelters for single men are accessible (27%), compared to 15 of 22 shelters in Vancouver, for example (68%). As our homeless population ages, need for accessibility increases. People 61+ now constitute 10% of Toronto’s homeless. According to the Canadian Observatory on Homelessness, links between poverty, risk of homelessness and disabilities are well documented. People with disabilities are twice as likely to live below the poverty line. Additionally, living in poverty is likely to increase instances of disability.
