In recognition of Cyber Security Awareness Month, the Electronic Recycling Association (ERA) is pleased to continue its partnership with the City of Burnaby for a free community electronics recycling and secure hard drive destruction event.
The Fraud Prevention: Secure Hard Drive Destruction & Electronics Recycling event will take place on Friday, October 2, 2026, at the Burnaby Eco-Centre.
The event gives Burnaby residents and community members an opportunity to safely dispose of unwanted electronics, securely destroy data stored on hard drives, and learn more about the importance of protecting personal and business information when retiring old technology.

Cyber Security Starts with Secure Technology Disposal
Cybersecurity is not only about protecting information while a computer or device is in use.
Old laptops, desktop computers, hard drives, tablets, phones, servers, and other devices may continue to store sensitive information even after they are no longer needed.
Improper disposal of electronics can create unnecessary risks, including unauthorized access to personal information, confidential business records, financial information, and other sensitive data.
During Cyber Security Awareness Month, ERA encourages individuals and organizations to consider secure technology disposal as an important part of their overall cybersecurity practices.

On-Site Hard Drive Shredding Demonstration
ERA will provide free on-site hard drive shredding services during the event.
Physical hard drive destruction helps ensure that information stored on a drive can no longer be recovered. It provides an effective option for individuals and organizations that need to securely dispose of data-bearing equipment.
Participants will also have an opportunity to learn more about secure data destruction and why proper end-of-life management of electronic devices is an important part of fraud prevention and cybersecurity.
Please note: Paper shredding services will not be available at this event.
Free Electronics Recycling in Burnaby
Participants are welcome to bring eligible unwanted or obsolete electronics for responsible recycling and secure processing.
A wide range of electronic devices and IT equipment can be accepted. To confirm whether your items are eligible, please review ERA’s Accepted Items list before attending the event.
Where possible, reusable equipment may be refurbished and redirected through ERA’s technology reuse and donation programs, while equipment that cannot be reused is processed through responsible recycling channels.
