Electronic Recycling Ottawa Efforts Help Low-Income Learner Prepare for ESL Course

By electronic recycling association November 20, 2025

The Electronic Recycling Association (ERA) is proud to support People, Words & Change (PWC)—a long-standing, non-profit literacy organization in Ottawa—by donating a refurbished laptop to one of its adult learners.

PWC provides free, one-on-one literacy and essential skills tutoring to adults across Ottawa. With the help of dedicated volunteer tutors, learners work toward their personal and professional goals: improving reading and writing skills, preparing for employment, strengthening digital literacy, or pursuing further education.

Supporting an ESL Learner on Their Educational Journey

This laptop donation will directly benefit a low-income adult learner who has recently enrolled in an upcoming English as a Second Language (ESL) class beginning this September. The learner does not have access to a personal computer—an essential tool for completing online coursework in today’s digital learning environment.

With this laptop, the learner will be able to:

  • Fully participate in virtual ESL classes
  • Access online learning materials
  • Complete assignments and assessments
  • Build digital skills needed for education and employment
  • Work independently at home without barriers

This donation helps ensure that technology is not a barrier to opportunity, especially for newcomers and adults rebuilding their skills and confidence.

Bridging the Digital Divide in Ottawa

ERA is committed to reducing e-waste while supporting communities across Canada. Refurbished devices give organizations like PWC valuable tools to help individuals learn, grow, and become more independent. With hundreds of charities on ERA’s waitlist, every device donated makes a meaningful difference.

We are grateful to support People, Words & Change and applaud the tremendous impact their volunteers and programs have in strengthening literacy and essential skills across Ottawa.

If your business or office has unwanted electronics, consider donating them through ERA. Together, we can give technology a second life and strengthen communities across Canada.
