The Electronic Recycling Association (ERA) was proud to participate in the Fraud Prevention and Data Security Event in Calgary on March 5, 2026, held at YMCA Shawnessy as part of Fraud Prevention Month 2026. The event brought together law enforcement agencies, consumer protection organizations, and community partners dedicated to educating the public about fraud prevention, cybersecurity, and protecting personal information.

Fraud Prevention Month is a nationwide initiative focused on helping Canadians recognize, reject, and report fraud. As cybercrime and identity theft continue to grow across Canada, community education events like this provide valuable tools and resources to help individuals and businesses stay informed and protected.

Community Partners Working Together

Several organizations joined the event to help protect Canadians from fraud and financial crime. These partners shared expert advice, educational resources, and practical guidance with attendees.

Visitors learned about current fraud risks and discovered ways to protect their personal and financial information.

ERA’s Role in Fraud Prevention

The Electronic Recycling Association (ERA) helps reduce the risk of identity theft and data breaches through secure electronics recycling and data destruction.

Many people do not realize that old electronics still store sensitive data. Computers, laptops, smartphones, and hard drives may contain personal or business information even after files are deleted.

If people do not properly wipe or destroy these devices, they can create serious security risks.

At the event, ERA’s team spoke with visitors about secure electronic recycling and responsible data destruction. The team explained how retired electronics can expose sensitive information when people dispose of them incorrectly

ERA also shared how responsible IT asset disposition (ITAD) and professional data destruction help prevent identity theft and data breaches. Secure data destruction protects information before organizations recycle or repurpose devices.

The team also discussed:

  • the importance of secure data destruction
  • the environmental benefits of electronics recycling
  • best practices for disposing of retired electronics
  • how IT asset disposition (ITAD) helps prevent fraud

Through ERA’s programs, technicians securely wipe donated electronics. When possible, the team refurbishes devices and donates them to charities, schools, and families across Canada. These donations help bridge the digital divide while protecting sensitive data.

Supporting a Safer Community

The event created an opportunity for residents and local businesses in Calgary to connect directly with fraud prevention specialists, ask questions, and learn how to better protect themselves from scams and identity theft.

ERA would like to thank the Alberta Fraud Prevention Committee and all participating partners for organizing this important community initiative and for their ongoing work to educate and protect Canadians.

Collaboration between community organizations, law enforcement agencies, and non-profit groups plays a critical role in strengthening public awareness and building safer communities.

ERA looks forward to continuing its participation in Fraud Prevention Month events across Canada, helping raise awareness about secure electronics recycling, data protection, and responsible disposal of IT equipment.
