The Electronic Recycling Association (ERA), in partnership with the City of Burnaby and Burnaby RCMP, successfully hosted a Fraud Prevention: Free Shredding & Electronics Recycling Event for residents and local businesses in Burnaby.
Held on March 27, 2026, at the Burnaby Eco-Centre, the event focused on promoting data security, fraud prevention, and responsible electronics recycling within the community.
Event Results and Impact
Together, we collected and diverted 3,010 lbs of electronics from landfills and securely shredded 366 hard drives, helping protect sensitive data and reduce environmental impact.
Collected items included 47 PCs, 9 LCD monitors, 80 laptops, 3 all-in-one computers, 12 printers, 3 switches, 107 cell phones, 44 tablets, and 366 hard drives. The event also brought in a variety of additional electronics and accessories, including gaming consoles, Apple TVs, iPods, cameras, keyboards, and more.
These results highlight strong community participation and demonstrate how local partnerships can make a meaningful difference in both fraud prevention and electronic waste reduction.

Fraud Prevention Burnaby Community Participation
The event welcomed residents and organizations who brought a wide range of unwanted electronics for responsible recycling and secure data destruction. Community members took advantage of the opportunity to safely dispose of outdated devices while learning more about protecting personal and business information.
Participants contributed laptops, computers, mobile devices, printers, cables, and other electronics, all of which were processed through ERA’s secure refurbishment and recycling program. Reusable equipment will be refurbished and donated to charities, schools, and non-profit organizations, supporting digital inclusion across Canada.
Fraud Prevention Burnaby Data Security Highlights
A key highlight of the event was the on-site hard drive shredding demonstration, where attendees observed the physical destruction of data-bearing devices. This demonstration helped raise awareness about the risks associated with improper disposal of electronics and emphasized the importance of secure data destruction.
By securely shredding storage devices, ERA ensured that sensitive information was permanently destroyed and unrecoverable. This hands-on demonstration reinforced best practices for preventing identity theft and reducing the risk of fraud.
Environmental and Social Impact
Events like this play a vital role in reducing electronic waste and supporting sustainability initiatives. Electronics collected during the event were diverted from landfills and processed through responsible recycling channels. Equipment suitable for reuse will be refurbished and redistributed to organizations in need, extending the lifecycle of technology.
Community members also had the opportunity to connect with representatives and learn about:
- Secure data destruction practices
- Fraud prevention awareness
- Responsible electronics recycling
- ERA’s technology donation programs
