Pacific Immigrant Resources Society Receives Free Tech

By electronic recycling association June 21, 2021

Pacific Immigrant Resources Society (PIRS) was in need of 4 monitors, mice, and keyboards to provide their staff who have been working from home due to the pandemic. The Electronic Recycling Association was happy to assist!

PIRS understands that immigrant women face unique challenges. Often, they have left their support systems behind. They may come from places where women have few opportunities. Their education and training may not be recognized in Canada. On top of that, being a mother at home with young children can lead to isolation, even more so for immigrants and refugees. That is why PIRS believes building a safe and accessible community is crucial.

This is how they serve their Community:

  • Accessibility is their goal! Conveniently, their programs take place inside targeted neighbourhoods where immigrant and refugee women live. They operate in schools, neighbourhood houses, community centres, and other safe, open spaces that encourage participation.
  • Their Partners and Outreach Support Workers employ trauma-sensitive techniques to create safe and nurturing environments for their participants. With their support, immigrant and refugee women build their self-confidence and gain the tools needed to become successful in their new life in Canada.
  • They learn from each other! Through open discussions, their program staff and participants develop a mutual understanding and respect for diversity and multiculturalism in Canada. Every voice adds to this ever-growing conversation.

Over the years, tens of thousands of immigrant and refugee women and children have accessed their programs. Graduates of PIRS programs have gone on to be leaders in the community.

Pacific Immigrant Resources Society achieves its mission of empowering immigrant and refugee women by providing:

  • English Language Classes that are tailored to participants needs
  • Children and Family Programs that improve access and understanding about life and parenting in the Canadian context
  • Leadership Programs that support women’s personal and career development

The Electronic Recycling Association (ERA) is a non-profit organization founded in 2004 to address the growing problem of e-waste and the increasing ‘digital divide’. For over fifteen years, ERA has offered simple solutions to help individuals and organizations prevent operational equipment from premature destruction. With a focus on recovery, refurbishment and reuse, ERA continuously supplies charitable groups with donated IT equipment while securely managing the retiring IT assets of organizations and individuals across Canada. We believe that reuse before recycling is critical in managing the waste created by computer hardware, and by offering industry-leading data destruction for all equipment we receive, we have securely repurposed hundreds of tons of equipment. Because not everything ERA receives can be reasonably repurposed, we have partnered with certified recycling organizations to process equipment that has reached the end of its productive life.
