Each October, Waste Reduction Week in Canada shines a light on how every individual and organization can reduce waste and protect our planet. This year’s theme lineup includes Circular Economy, E-Waste, Textiles, Plastics, Food Waste, and more — but at the Electronic Recycling Association (ERA), our focus is on E-waste and how responsible reuse can create lasting impact.
Why E-Waste Matters
E-waste is the world’s fastest-growing waste stream, with millions of devices ending up in landfills each year. Many of these electronics still have life left in them. By donating, refurbishing, and reusing technology, we can significantly reduce our environmental footprint while empowering people through digital access.
Reuse Before Recycle
When electronics reach ERA, our technicians carefully assess each device. Reusable items are securely wiped of data and refurbished to extend their lifespan. Only items beyond repair are responsibly recycled. This reuse-first approach supports a circular economy — one where resources are continually repurposed rather than discarded.
ERA’s National Impact
Since inception, the ERA has collected, refurbished, and donated tens of thousands of electronic devices across Canada. Each donation reduces e-waste, cuts carbon emissions, and supports charities, schools, and individuals in need of reliable technology. Together, we’re not only keeping electronics out of landfills — we’re giving them a second life that benefits communities nationwide.
Get Involved
This Waste Reduction Week, ERA invites Canadians to drop off unused electronics at one of our many depots across the country or to book a free pickup for larger collections.
Let’s make e-waste reduction a collective effort. Every reused device is one less in a landfill — and one more in the hands of someone who needs it.
