The Electronic Recycling Association(ERA) recently donated a laptop to the Conseil Scolaire Viamonde (French Public School Board) in Toronto, ON. This donation will used to support a family of three brothers who immigrated from Africa three years ago. While the two elder brothers, currently in grade 9, received laptops through the advocacy of the center, their younger brother, now in grade 7 at a local high school, approached for assistance. Their family faces financial challenges, with their mother unable to work and their father holding two low-earning jobs. In this time of need, ERA gladly stepped in to offer its help and support.
The Viamonde School Board is a growing French-language public school board, with a strong commitment to education. It serves over 13,000 students from kindergarten to the end of high school. In the 2020-2021 school year, the board employed approximately 2,500 people, including around 1,200 teachers. With 41 elementary schools, 15 secondary schools, and a combined elementary and secondary school, the board’s influence spans a significant geographic area, covering communities from Windsor to Trenton in the west to Penetanguishene and the Niagara region in the east. Additionally, the board touches the lives of students in Toronto and London, extending its reach from north to south. At the Electronic Recycling Association (ERA), we strive to help foster a community of innovation and connectivity. As a non-profit ourselves, we see first-hand what supporting the communities we operate in does for those living there. Providing electronic devices allows these charitable organizations to continue in their mission of bringing people together in a creative space.
Reusing electronics to create a new community program reduces how much e-waste ends up in our landfills. If you’re not using a printer, laptop, or projector, many organizations that operate locally in your town or city could greatly benefit from it. Donating a laptop to the ERA means another organization will be able to utilize it to start a new program, on-board more administrative staff/volunteers, or teach youth and seniors a new digital program. As our society continues to advance in technology faster than ever, the demand for updated electronics to support these community initiatives increases as well.
