“iSisters would like to thank Index Exchange and Electronic Recycling Association for their generous donation of 20 laptops to our technology mentoring programs. Through education, iSisters supports women in need to build better futures for themselves, their families, and their communities. The Covid-19 pandemic has widened the gap between those with digital skills and technology and those without, and these laptops will help us move towards a more digitally equitable society.” Erin Keeley-Messier, Program Manager for iSisters Technology Mentoring.
iSisters Technology Mentoring was founded by women, for women. In 2001, four teachers – all innovators concerned with leaving their community better than they found it – decided to volunteer together. They knew their strength lay in education and feminism, and they identified technology mentorship as a gap in the services available in Ottawa.
Through trial and error, a donated computer lab, a set of Palm Pilots and plenty of long hours after work, Cathy, Helen, Michelle and Kelly founded iSisters. For twenty years, iSisters along with their community partners, has worked to serve the most vulnerable women in their region. They help women who would not otherwise have access to gain basic technology skills, search for employment and begin to build a brighter future for themselves and their families. Check out their website to see how you can get involved.
The ERA (Electronic Recycling Association), is focused on reducing unnecessary waste and/or environmental impact through effective management of retiring electronic and IT equipment. As a non-profit organization with deep community roots, it is our “reuse” focus and donation activities that set us apart from others in this sector. We are an ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 Certified Company that offers pickup services, comprehensive data security measures and subsequent reporting. Individuals and organizations alike move through technology hardware for a number of different reasons, and often there is ongoing productive use.
The ERA believes that “reuse” where ever possible is the most ecological approach to this growing stream, and an excellent way to compel real community goodwill at the same time. The Electronic Recycling Association has a clear mission of reducing electronic waste through computer recycling, laptop recycling and computer donation services. With depots throughout Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and all of Canada. ERA provides a great way to recycle electronic equipment safely and securely.
