Earth Week 2026: A Collaborative Step Toward Sustainability

From April 22 to April 29, 2026, the Electronic Recycling Association (ERA) proudly partnered with the Canadian Museum of Nature (CMN) to host a one-week internal electronics recycling collection event at the museum’s VMMB facility in Ottawa.

This initiative highlights a shared commitment to environmental responsibility, data security, and community impact. It also brings together sustainability goals with practical, efficient operations.

CMN already follows a structured IT workflow. Their team tracks all devices, wipes data securely, and disposes of hardware responsibly. ERA supported this system by expanding access to safe electronics recycling. As a result, staff could participate without affecting internal processes.

Event Logistics & Coordination

ERA and CMN worked closely to ensure a smooth and efficient experience.

The event ran from April 22 to April 29, 2026 at the Canadian Museum of Nature (VMMB), located at 240 McLeod St, Ottawa, ON.

During this time, staff dropped off unwanted electronics throughout regular business hours. This flexible format increased participation and made the process simple and accessible.

Education Meets Sustainability

In addition to collection, the event focused on education and awareness.

ERA and CMN provided guidance on identifying e-waste. They also shared insights about the materials used in electronics. Furthermore, internal communications encouraged staff to take part.

As a result, the event became more than a collection initiative. It created a valuable learning experience and helped promote long-term sustainable habits.

Promoting Responsible Electronics Recycling in Canada

ERA processes all collected electronics according to certified standards. First, the team ensures secure data destruction and safe handling. Then, technicians refurbish and test reusable devices. After that, ERA donates these devices to charities, schools, and non-profit organizations across Canada.

However, not all equipment can be reused. In those cases, ERA dismantles and recycles materials using environmentally responsible methods. This process reduces landfill waste and protects natural resources.

Overall, these efforts support digital inclusion, reduce e-waste, and strengthen sustainable practices across Canadian communities.

Supporting ERA’s Mission

This partnership reflects ERA’s mission: to reduce electronic waste through reuse, responsible recycling, and technology donations that support communities across Canada.

The success of this initiative shows how organizations can integrate electronics recycling into their sustainability strategies.

Earth Week serves as a starting point. However, organizations can run similar programs year-round. In turn, they can create lasting environmental and social impact.
