Discover How AI Drives Electronic Waste Growth and How ERA Enables Responsible Recycling and Donation

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence is transforming industries but also accelerating electronic waste (e-waste) production. Data centers and AI infrastructure demand frequent hardware upgrades—high-performance GPUs, servers, and related equipment often replaced within 2–5 years—leading to projections of 1.2 to 5 million additional metric tons of e-waste by 2030 from generative AI alone.

Businesses retiring old IT assets face a dual challenge: secure data disposal and environmental responsibility. The Electronic Recycling Association (ERA), addresses this through secure refurbishment, donation, and recycling programs. ERA prioritizes reuse before recycling, helping organizations manage retiring technology responsibly while supporting communities since 2004.

For example, ERA donated 2 laptops and 1 projector to the African Canadian Social Development Council (ACSDC). This equipment empowers community outreach, education, and digital literacy programs for underserved populations. ERA’s work promotes digital inclusion by refurbishing gently used computers, laptops, monitors, and peripherals for donation to charities, schools, non-profits, shelters, and community organizations across Canada. Access to technology is no longer a luxury—it is essential for job applications, education, healthcare access, and staying connected.

AI’s hardware-intensive nature intensifies the global e-waste crisis, as rapid innovation renders powerful equipment obsolete quickly. Traditional recycling alone is insufficient; reuse extends product lifecycles, conserves resources, and cuts emissions from manufacturing new devices. ERA excels here with ISO-certified processes (including 27001 for information security) for data destruction, refurbishment, and ethical recycling partnerships. Usable devices receive new life through donations; non-reusable items are processed responsibly to recover materials. This “reuse first” model diverts significant waste from landfills, supports circular economy principles, and aligns with sustainability reporting needs for businesses.

You can help by getting involved:

Businesses & Organizations:

  • Schedule a secure pickup for bulk IT assets.
  • Drop off at ERA depots in major cities (Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto, Montreal, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Halifax, Ottawa.).
  • Receive certificates for data destruction and responsible disposal.

Individuals:

  • Donate working or repairable electronics at depots or via shipping labels.
  • Participate in community events and Earth Day collections.

Charities & Non-Profits:

Apply for technology grants (up to 100 devices in some programs).

Request specific equipment to support your mission.

Everyone:

Visit www.era.ca to book a pickup, find a depot, or learn more. Your retired technology can reduce e-waste, fight the digital divide, and create lasting community impact.

Start today—reuse, recycle responsibly, and power positive change.
