Secure Your Data, Protect Your Identity

In today’s digital age, safeguarding personal information is paramount. With the rise of cyber threats and identity theft, ensuring the secure disposal of electronic devices is crucial. To address this issue, the Halifax Regional Police and the Electronic Recycling Association (ERA) are joining forces for a special event in honor of Fraud Prevention Month.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, March 23rd, 2024, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm, as the Halifax community is invited to participate in this important initiative. The event will take place at 7 Mellor Avenue, Dartmouth, NS, B3B 0E8, in the parking lot.

The primary focus of this event is to securely recycle unwanted electronics and destroy personal data to prevent fraud and identity theft. Individuals are encouraged to bring in their old or unused electronic devices, including hard drives, computers, laptops, phones, tablets, tapes, and other small gadgets containing sensitive data.

The Electronic Recycling Association will be on-site to collect and securely dispose of the electronics. Accepted items include consumer electronics like gaming consoles, iPods, and stereo equipment, as well as desktop computers, laptops, printers, peripherals, servers, software, and more. However, household or personal appliances will not be accepted.

In addition to the electronic recycling service, members of the Halifax Regional Police will be available to answer questions and provide valuable information on data safety and fraud prevention. This presents a unique opportunity for the community to engage directly with law enforcement and learn practical tips for protecting their personal information.

Furthermore, this event is entirely free of charge. However, the Halifax Police invites attendees to contribute to a good cause by bringing non-perishable food donations for the local food bank. Let’s come together not only to safeguard our digital identities but also to support those in need within our community.

For those unable to attend the event, drop-off instructions and alternative locations can be found on the ERA’s website. By responsibly disposing of electronic devices and ensuring the destruction of personal data, individuals can play a proactive role in combating fraud and safeguarding their identities.

Fraud Prevention Month serves as a reminder of the importance of staying vigilant against cyber threats and taking proactive measures to protect oneself. The partnership between the Halifax Regional Police and the Electronic Recycling Association underscores the collective effort needed to address modern-day challenges related to data security and identity theft.

So, let’s come together as a community on March 23rd to securely recycle our electronics, destroy personal data, support the local food bank, and take a stand against fraud. Together, we can make a difference in safeguarding our digital identities and creating a safer online environment for all.
