The Electronic Recycling Association (ERA) recently donated laptops to the Shelter Them Poverty Relief initiative. The donation of 12 laptops, paving the way for a brighter future for children in Gateko Village, Rwanda.

Shelter Them Poverty Relief, a small charity operated entirely by volunteers in Canada, has been working tirelessly to make a positive impact in the lives of those less fortunate. In 2021, the organization took a giant step forward by establishing an Early Childhood Education Centre in Gateko Village. The center currently enrolls 90 students, aged 3 to 6 years, preparing them for their primary school journey.

However, the donation of laptops from ERA is set to extend its impact beyond early childhood education. The laptops will play a crucial role in supporting Shelter Them’s 100-plus children who are already in primary school, secondary school, and university. Despite their limited resources, the organization recognizes the importance of providing technological tools for the older students as they progress in their academic journeys.

Shelter Them Poverty Relief firmly believes in the transformative power of education, considering it the key to breaking the cycle of poverty that many of these children face. The laptops donated by ERA will serve as valuable resources for students in the older grades and those pursuing post-secondary studies. With a commitment to allocating 100% of their funds to their team in Gateko Village, Shelter Them strives to ensure that every penny contributes directly to the welfare and education of the children under their care.

Access to computers opens up a world of opportunities for these students, empowering them to develop crucial digital literacy skills and explore educational resources beyond the traditional classroom setting. The laptops donated by ERA not only address an immediate need but also signify a step towards bridging the digital divide that often hinders the educational progress of underserved communities.

The ERA believes that “reuse” where ever possible is the most ecological approach to this growing stream, and an excellent way to compel real community goodwill at the same time.

The Electronic Recycling Association has a clear mission of reducing electronic waste through computer recycling, laptop recycling and computer donation services. With depots throughout Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and all of Canada. ERA provides a great way to recycle electronic equipment safely and securely.
