The Electronic Recycling Association (ERA) is proud to share that a vintage IBM 62EH Hard Drive, dating back to 1972, has been donated to the Canadian Vintage Computer Federation (CVCFED) as part of ERA’s ongoing commitment to technology reuse, responsible electronics recycling, and historic technology preservation in Canada.
This donation is connected to ERA’s new partnership with CVCFED and highlights the importance of identifying older electronics that may have educational, historical, or preservation value before they are recycled.
Giving Vintage Technology a Second Life
At ERA, electronics are seen as more than waste. Many devices can be refurbished, donated, reused for parts, or responsibly recycled.
Some items, however, have historical value.
The 1972 IBM 62EH Hard Drive is one example of technology that may no longer be used today but still represents an important part of computing history. By donating it to CVCFED, ERA is helping preserve this vintage hard drive for education, research, and future generations.

Supporting Preservation Before Recycling
ERA regularly receives retired electronics from businesses, schools, government offices, nonprofits, and organizations across Canada.
When older, rare, or unusual technology is collected, ERA works to determine whether the item should be refurbished, donated, reused, recycled, or preserved.
This donation shows that responsible electronics recycling can go beyond disposal. It demonstrates how e-waste management can also support education, history, community learning, and technology preservation.
Why This Donation Matters
Vintage technology helps people understand how far computing has come. Older hard drives, computers, processors, monitors, keyboards, servers, and accessories show the size, design, engineering, and innovation of previous generations of technology.
By donating the 1972 vintage IBM 62EH Hard Drive to the Canadian Vintage Computer Federation, ERA is helping to:
- Preserve a piece of computing history
- Support vintage technology education in Canada
- Reduce unnecessary electronic waste
- Encourage reuse and preservation before recycling
- Build stronger connections with museums, collectors, and technology preservation groups
- Raise awareness about the historical value of legacy electronics
Through this donation, ERA is helping protect important technology that may otherwise have been forgotten or recycled.
ERA’s Commitment to Responsible Technology Reuse
Since 2004, ERA has helped organizations across Canada reduce electronic waste through secure pickup, data destruction, refurbishment, donation, and responsible recycling.
This donation reflects ERA’s broader mission to find the best possible outcome for every device. While some electronics can support charities, schools, and nonprofits, others may have historical value and deserve to be preserved.
Contact ERA Before Recycling Older Electronics
If your organization has old computers, vintage hard drives, servers, monitors, keyboards, retro gaming equipment, or other legacy electronics, contact ERA before disposing of them.
Some items may be suitable for reuse, donation, or preservation, while others can be responsibly recycled through ERA’s electronics recycling programs.
Together with partners like the Canadian Vintage Computer Federation, ERA is helping reduce e-waste, support communities, and preserve important pieces of Canada’s technology history.
Reuse first. Preserve when it matters. Recycle responsibly.
